Frontline Report: February 22 Christchurch Earthquake

February 23, 2011 | David Asscherick

David Asscherick shares his eyewitness account of the 6.3 quake.

A deadly earthquake (6.3 magnitude) struck Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday at 12:51 p.m. Reports are that the Central Business District (CBD) received the brunt of it.

They are correct. I should know, I was there.

My family and I have been here in New Zealand since January 25th conducting the What Does the Future Hold? Bible Prophecy Seminar. I was on the third story of our rental house—located in the heart of the CBD—preparing for the evening’s meeting when it happened. There was no warning, no indication, and no build-up. It happened instantly and violently. One second all was well and normal; the next the house was shaking wildly. My instant thought was, This building is going down, I’ve got to get out of here!

This is our rental in downtown Christchurch. I was in the room in the upper left-hand corner of the building. The visible patched cracks are from the earlier September 4th quake. I snapped this photo just after …

Let the REBELution Begin

February 21, 2011 | Jeffrey Rosario

Recently I stumbled across some disturbing statistics that confirmed a gnawing suspicion that had been brewing in my mind. I believe that my generation of Adventists is increasingly an endangered species:

There’s a 50 percent chance that a teenager who gets baptized in his or her mid-teens will leave the Adventist Church completely by the time he or she is 25.1

One in every five Adventist churches in North America doesn’t have a single child, teenager, or young adult. In fact, the median age in our churches is nearly 60—20 years older than the average American.2

According to a survey, seven in 10 youth (ages 18-30) who attended church regularly in high school reported that they stopped attending by age 23. Of that group, 34 percent said they never returned to church, even occasionally, by the age of 30. Translation: 1 in 4 protestant youth have left the church for good.3

Added to this, consider the results of various Barna Research Group polls showing that this generation of youth and …

Prepare. Prepare. Prepare.

Twenty-six point two miles. 138,435 feet. 1,661,220 inches.

There are many permutations, but the distance remains the same: long. For reasons not perfectly clear to me, running a marathon seemed like a good idea. That was six months ago. It’s easy to say yes. It’s easy to go online and register. It’s easy to read a book on running the marathon. It’s easy to tell people that you’re going to run a marathon. It’s easy to buy the shorts, shoes, and shirts.

The marathon itself, of course, wouldn’t be easy, but, hey, it’s six months away. Plenty of time to get ready. Plenty of time to get in shape. Plenty of time . . .

Wolverhampton Calling

February 17, 2011 | Jeffrey Rosario

For several months now, the North England Conference had been planning a weekend retreat for young people in a beautiful country side location just over the border in Wales. The purpose was to present methods for in-depth Bible study and the impact that the Bible can have on our lives. The organizers monitored the slow applications for weeks and eventually realized that the youth were having difficulty with the related costs of the weekend. With the scheduled date quickly approaching, they had to think quick. Should they return to the drawing board? Should they cancel? Something had to be done. Refusing to cancel and accept defeat, they decided on a quick change of plans.

Instead of having the young people come out to Wales, they decided to bring it to them. The new  location was the city of Wolverhampton, just outside of Birmingham (2nd largest city in England after London). Down to just a few days before the weekend, they had just one shot to get the word out: FACEBOOK!

2011 Campaign: Christchurch, New Zealand

February 8, 2011 | ARISE

It’s no secret that Pastor David Asscherick likes New Zealand! Well, he’s there again, this time preaching a full-length campaign in the largest city on the South Island, Christchurch. The meetings are themed “What Does the Future Hold?” and are built, in part, around the September 4th, 7.1 earthquake that shook the city both literally and spiritually. Hundreds of aftershocks, some as high as 5.3, have continued to keep the city on edge. An estimated $4 billion dollars (NZD) in damage has already been done. Everywhere one looks buildings are being propped up, repaired, or taken down. Truly this is a time when many here are asking, “What does the future hold?”

Pastor Asscherick’s meetings opened Tuesday, February 8 at the Aurora Center for the Performing Arts. An estimated 600 people attended the opening night session, which was divided into two parts. The first presentation centered on Daniel 2 and the second message on Daniel 9 and the 70-week prophecy. Both were well received. …
