Obedience vs Legalism

Obedience vs Legalism

A man once came to me and said, “My marriage is falling apart. My wife says she doesn’t have feelings for me anymore, and my feelings for her are pretty much dead too. I guess it’s over, huh?”

He was startled by my immediate response.

“No, it’s not over. Read the Songs of Solomon and do exactly what it says, and throw in 1 Peter 3:7 for good measure, and you will save your marriage. Not only will you save your marriage, it will become great, far better than what you ever imagined possible.”

“What,” he responded with a tone of incredulity. “Just read those Bible passages and do what they say?”

“Yes, read and obey, dude, read and obey! And all will be well,” I declared with prophet-level confidence.

Still looking skeptical, he said, “But don’t we need some marriage counseling or something?”

“You may need counseling,” I said, “if you are especially stubborn and want to take the long, painful route to repairing your marriage. Good Christian counseling …

A Power to Withstand

A Power to Withstand

Did you know that Jesus speaks the truth (John 8:40), and the devil speaks the lie (John 8:44)? That difference may seem elementary to anyone who knows something of what we call “the great controversy.” But the lie must be very subtle at times, as it appeals to our self-interest and focus. The devil is a master at this deception (Revelation 12:9; 20:3, 8, 10). Remember Jesus pointedly warned against this very danger, especially during the time just prior to His second coming (Matthew 24:3-5, 11, 24).

We are now at that time, and have been, according to the prophecies, since the beginning of the Advent movement. Within our own history there is abundant evidence of the many attempts Satan has made to deceive. After all, if he can confuse God’s workers, his bigger schemes are more successful.

Consider this wise counsel from 110 years ago:

I have had presentations regarding the deceptions that Satan is bringing in at this time. I have been instructed that we should make prominent …

ALIVE: Enlargement vs. Shrinkage

Enlargement vs. Shrinkage

Before the age of GPS or iPhone Maps, London taxi drivers relied on their memories. They developed what was coined “the knowledge.” Developed over centuries, the winding, crooked streets of London resemble a maze more than neat perpendicular blocks. Some are paved. Some are cobblestone. There are the major thoroughfares and then the seemingly narrow alleyways. Needless to say, London is a difficult city to navigate by car. Not more than a decade ago, beginner taxi drivers had a huge memory task of learning the streets of London. They had to know the most efficient ways and alternative routes of getting from one location to another.

When the brains of London taxi drivers were scanned and compared with scans of non-taxi drivers of similar gender and age, a noticeable difference presented itself. A part of the brain called the hippocampus was found to be significantly larger in the taxi drivers than in the control group.

We all know that the brain is an amazing organ with incredible potential. Like many …

Global Impact

Global Impact

In 1985, a few of us new converts—James Rafferty, Sue Gibson, and myself—received what we knew to be specific direction from the God of the universe. We were young and on fire for the Lord (now we’re older but still on fire for the Lord). James and I were conducting small group Bible studies in homes and traveling to preach in local venues. We were driven by these astounding prophetic words:

“I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory” (Revelation 18:1).

Here John foretells a time when the message of the gospel will go global. People all over the world will have their hearts and minds “illuminated” with the glorious truth of God’s love embodied in Christ. We realized that something massive and dramatic would have to happen in order for the message to be placed within the reach of everybody on the planet. And then, somewhere along the lines as we were preaching and teaching, we read these …
