Literature Reports from the World Field

The Seventh-day Adventist Church membership in Zambia has doubled in the past 10 years, growing from 500,000 members to more than a million. With a population of 15 million people, Zambia has the highest Adventist Church growth rate in Africa, and thousands are added to the church every year. What is the secret to the church’s success?

During a brief visit I made to Zambia on behalf of Light Bearers Ministry, one of the directors for the South Zambia Union Conference organized an advisory committee meeting which included directors from seven conferences and fields. We met in the small mining town of Mufulira, Copperbelt. Each director gave a short report on how the material from Light Bearers was used in 2016. One of the directors read the following statement:

“I was shown men and women studying with intense interest papers and few pages of tracts upon present truth. They would read the evidences so wonderful and new to them, and would open their Bibles with a deep and new interest, …

A Banker Sees An Opportunity by Meiring Pretorius

A Banker Sees an Opportunity

“Many whom God has qualified to do excellent work accomplish very little, because they attempt little. Thousands pass through life as if they had no definite object for which to live, no standard to reach. Such will obtain a reward proportionate to their works” (Ellen White, Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 331).

A man by the name of Master Makore worked for a major bank in Harare, Zimbabwe. Someone gave him three Light Bearers Bible lessons to read, which changed his life. He soon felt a deep conviction to share this newfound truth with his colleagues during his lunch breaks. So Master’s co-workers would sit under a big tree as he taught them from the three Bible lessons he had, which covered the state of the dead, the Second Coming, and the health message. He had so familiarized himself with the topics that he could answer the questions that naturally arose.

During one of the lunch hour discussions, two men came to interrupt the conversation. They told Master that he should …

Changed and Inspired by Literature by Meiring Pretorius

Changed and Inspired by Literature

As I drove into the country of Lesotho, I typed into my GPS the address of the Lesotho Conference headquarters and followed the directions into the central part of Maseru, the capital city of Lesotho. With the GPS it should not be too difficult to locate the building, I thought to myself. Then I heard the voice of my GPS saying, “Arriving at destination.” Looking around, I could not see any conference building. This is strange, I thought. Eventually, after driving around looking for the desired building, I decided to ask for directions. To my surprise, people did not know where the Seventh-day Adventist Church headquarters were (although I later found out the conference building was not far from where I’d been). I prayed, got into my vehicle, and decided to continue looking for the building in that area. I saw a sign for an Adventist secondary school, turned off, and asked for directions to the conference office. Fortunately, it was on the same premises.

However, even within the secondary …

How Far Into Africa by Meiring

How Far into Africa?

November 4, 2016 | Meiring Pretorius

Have you ever wondered how the gospel message will reach every person on the globe? Well, this is God’s promise in His Word according to Matthew 24:14: “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (NKJV). A huge part of this promise is being fulfilled already. God’s Spirit is at work all over the world and He wants to give us a greater measure of His Spirit. I stand in awe every time I see how God reaches people and touches their hearts, not only those who are being converted but also the hearts of those who bring the message of love. It has been my privilege to see the extensive and far-reaching effects of passing out gospel literature in Africa.

It all started when my wife and I were on our way to visit a Bible worker in the Northern Luapula Province of Zambia (God sent us to this country to …

Literature Evangelism in Tanzania by Meiring Pretorius

Literature Evangelism in Tanzania

September 2, 2016 | Meiring Pretorius

Magomeni Seventh-day Adventist Church believes that the most rapid and cost-effective way of placing the gospel in the hands of humanity’s hungering masses is through spreading truth-filled literature and publications.

It is because of this inherent faith we decided to contact Light Bearers Ministry (LBM), requesting their collaboration and partnership with us for achieving this soul-saving objective. Our request was accepted by LBM and we received two 20-foot containers loaded with four million publications, free of charge, written in Kiswahili and English for distribution to the most needy and receptive people of Tanzania.

In fulfilling this mission, we combined several evangelistic campaign methods of reaching our people. The strategies used included house-to-house visitation, Sabbath School classes, Bible study classes and public effort campaigns in the churches and open grounds. We sent the publications to various institutions of higher learning in Tanzania. We opened Bible classes in schools, prisons, hospitals and strategic points of influence.

About 28 churches in Dar es Salaam (DSM) were allocated and given publications for distribution. About …

Light Bearers’ Materials Lead to Booming Bible Schools in Malawi

Light Bearers’ Materials Lead to Booming Bible Schools in Malawi

February 5, 2016 | Meiring Pretorius

My recent trip to Malawi was very fruitful. The Voice of Prophecy Bible School Director, Pastor Moffat Botolo, went out of his way to make my visit meaningful. His department of the Malawi Union Conference is very active in using Light Bearers’ literature. In fact, they have an impressive organized system in place for the distribution of the material.

First, they engage in mass distribution of message tracts and Bible School enrollment cards. Target areas include market places, schools, prisons, hospitals and public marches.

Secondly, church members go door-to-door enrolling people as students in the Bible School.

In order to facilitate the constant flow of new students, the church in Malawi operates 1,470 Bible Schools at local churches. This method of outreach involves a lot of hard work, but the church members are obviously happy to engage in the task because they see the fruit from their labors. Botolo points out that, “The Voice of Prophecy Bible School has been proven to be one of the most exciting and effective …

Prison Ministry

What message does one give to a prison full of inmates who committed capital offences? Most are sentenced 20 years or more. Others are on death row. As we approached the high-walled Naivasha maximum security prison, my eye caught the sign: “This is a crime free area.” I was not sure if that was supposed to give me comfort. I started my sermon with this ice breaker: “Seeing the high walls and all the security guards, I can assure you that I feel very safe in this prison. What the guards don’t know is that you are innocent, because you are forgiven. You are just experiencing the consequences of your actions.” While the smiles were still visible on the inmates’ faces, I turned to Isaiah 61:1 and read:

“The Lord has anointed me . . . to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”

I wanted them to know that God’s love alone holds the key to their liberty.

Before the sermon, …
