The Big Apple Was Sweet in March

So I have a new church on my ‘favorites’ list. It’s the Church of the Advent Hope in New York City. I’m still savoring the blessings from my visit in early March. The church meets at a nice little building in Manhattan’s Upper East Side about two blocks from Central Park. If that sounds yuppie, it’s because it is. Some big shot people have called this neighborhood home. People you might’ve heard of—Lady Gaga, Spike Lee, Madonna, Ralph Lauren, and Rudy Giuliani to name a few.

The weekend was scheduled for three presentations on spiritual revival and growth. I was told that it would be a church with a young adult atmosphere, but it was better than I expected. On Sabbath morning, the three hundred people present were almost all young adults in their 20s and 30s. Now, I normally preach to young adults. It’s an integral part of my ministry. But when I preach to several hundred of them it’s usually at a convention or special weekend of some sort where young people have gathered from surrounding churches.

But there I was taking in the energy, the fresh feel, and the warm atmosphere in a room packed with young adults. Was this a convention? No. A young adult retreat? Nope.

This is just church baby! Just business as usual.

Here is a congregation full of eager, hungry and amiable young Adventists. All waiting to hear the Word. I was encouraged at how the preaching of the Word was received. Conversations throughout the weekend were inspiring. I can’t believe how much potential this group has. Just check out a brief profile: there are doctors, lawyers, nurses, an architect, a designer for Coach, models (shout out to my cousin Yomaris), a former MTV executive, staff members from the United Nations, a survivor from the Rwanda genocide who is now studying law—you know, your typical church members!

To all you pastors out there. . . I know, I know. Life is not fair. I feel your pain.

Maybe Pastor Todd Stout ate tons of veggie links and watched 3ABN for days non stop in his past life to deserve all this. I don’t know. But Pastor Stout, I know I told you a hundred times already, but you are one lucky man. You’re like the guy with the pretty girlfriend everyone’s jealous of.

I was definitely blessed meeting him and am thankful for his support. God’s going to do good things through him. Praise God for calling us into the ministry. Praise God for the Word that brings inspiration!
